This research aims to study the preservation and promotion of unique traditional performing arts in Luang Prabang, a World Heritage City, in accordance with Laos’ National Socio-Cultural Development Plan. The study collected information on the types, historical backgrounds, transformation processes, challenges, and preservation approaches of these arts. Data was gathered through interviews with senior and successor artists for 25 people. The findings reveal a rich diversity of performing arts in Luang Prabang, including various forms of “Khab” (traditional singing such as Khab Thum, Arn Nangsue, Khab Salang-Samsaew, etc.), “Fon” (traditional dancing such as Fon Nang Kaew, Fon Phalack Phalame), and “Lakhon I-Pok” (I-Pok Drama). Each form possesses unique historical and characteristic features deeply embedded in the local culture and beliefs. However, these arts face significant challenges from social development, the influence of modern media, and economic constraints. Key preservation strategies identified include raising awareness, utilizing traditional festivals as platforms for dissemination, creative adaptation of new forms, knowledge transfer, and government support. This research provides crucial insights for planning and implementing initiatives to safeguard and promote Luang Praban’s invaluable cultural heritage.
